Symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Excessive worry
  • Muscle tension
  • Nervousness
  • Obsessing over a particular topic or issue
  • Having anxiety or panic attacks ( which can include shortness of breath, pounding heart, a feeling like one is going to die or lose control)
  • Struggling with a fear of being around others (social anxiety symptoms) or leaving their homes (agoraphobia)

Some people may experience anxiety only about a specific topic (speaking in public, driving over bridges) while others may experience severe feelings of anxiety much of the day nearly every day.

What are the signs and symptoms of anxiety?

Many people suffer with symptoms of anxiety than you may realize. Anxiety affects approximately 1.5 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given year (that's about 3.3 million American adults) but many aren't aware of the symptoms.
